Altoona by the Numbers: Reading the MAVRYK's Federal Test Report

We teach buyers to pull any manufacturer's Altoona report and read the numbers. Fair's fair — here are ours, with the context to read them the same skeptical way we recommend reading everyone's. The full report is public; this is the guided tour.

The test we signed up for

We entered the MAVRYK in the 7-year/200,000-mile service class — the durability commitment matching how our buyers actually own buses, and a tougher program than shorter classes. The bus we sent matters as much as the class: test bus #4 — the fourth bus we ever built. Not a massaged one-off prepared after years of production refinement; the test validated the design nearly from serial number one, which means every production bus since has been built to a standard the track already blessed (and improved past it — more below).

The scorecard

  • 82.6 aggregate score across the test's weighted categories
  • 100% on reliability — failure frequency and severity through the full program
  • 98% on safety — braking, handling, and the documented inspection regime
  • 97% on structural integrity — the punishment track's verdict on the cage, body, and mounts
  • 53.81 total maintenance hours, against the 125-hour class maximum — the bus needed well under half the wrench-time budget the test allows

That last number is the one we'd point buyers at first, on any report including ours — maintenance hours are the closest thing federal testing produces to a preview of ownership cost. A bus that crossed the accelerated equivalent of seven years and 200,000 miles using 43% of its allowed maintenance budget is making a specific, checkable statement about what it will ask of your shop.

(As we say in the how-to-read-reports guide: compare any bus's hours against its own class maximum, not against other builders' numbers across different classes and test years — conditions vary. The ceiling comparison is the honest one.)

What broke — and what we changed

Every bus that runs Altoona breaks things; the track exists to find them, and the failure log is public in ours like everyone's. What separates builders is what happens next. The test drove a set of production improvements that every MAVRYK since carries:

  • Radiused corners where the test found stress concentration
  • Brace upgrades from 11-gauge to 7-gauge steel at the points the track worked hardest
  • A single-piece heat shield replacing a multi-piece assembly
  • A 360°-welded ADA door frame upgrade
  • A reinforced panel mount at a location the test exposed

We publish this list for a reason beyond transparency: it's the demonstration of what testing is for. A test bus that "passed with nothing to fix" wasn't tested hard; a builder who won't say what they changed didn't use the test. "We tested, then we improved" is the whole point of sending bus #4 to the track — the design proved itself early, and the production line got seven years of simulated abuse as engineering feedback.

One report covers one model — the standard we hold everyone to, applied to ourselves: the numbers above are the MAVRYK's. The STRYKR is in testing now, and the KAVLYR is being built for the test track. We'll publish those results the same way when they exist, failure logs and all.
