Ford's E-Series cutaway — the platform under a huge share of America's shuttle buses — comes in two flavors: E-350 and E-450. If you're replacing a bus you bought a decade ago, you probably remember the names but not the details. Here's the practical difference, and how to know which one your next bus needs.
The E-450 carries more — more passengers, more equipment, more margin — because it has a higher gross vehicle weight rating, heavier-duty rear axle, springs, and brakes. The E-350 costs less and rides on the same footprint, but runs out of legal payload sooner.
Both share the cab, the gas V8, and the transmission family. The differences live underneath:
A shuttle body, a wheelchair lift, climate systems, and fuel consume most of a chassis's rating before anyone boards. Figure roughly 150–200 lbs per passenger with their belongings, more with luggage service. Work backward from GVWR minus finished-bus curb weight and the seat count picks the chassis for you:
The mistake to avoid is buying to your average load instead of your peak load. A bus that's over its GVWR on Sunday morning or at Saturday airport peak is illegal, hard on brakes and axles, and a liability problem waiting for its moment. If your honest peak brushes the E-350's ceiling, buy the E-450 — the cost difference is small against the service life of the bus.
Two identical-looking buses can have very different service lives depending on how close to their rating they run. A chassis that spends every mile at 98% of GVWR wears brakes, springs, and tires on an accelerated schedule. One with 15% headroom shrugs off the same route. This is why experienced fleet buyers habitually spec up: the E-450's margin is cheap insurance on a vehicle you'll own for a decade.
One more note for the decade-away buyer: the E-Series cab you remember is gone — Ford sells the E-Series today as a cutaway/stripped chassis specifically for bodies like shuttle buses, and it stays in production precisely because this industry runs on it. Parts, techs, and familiarity are everywhere, which is a genuine ownership advantage over more exotic platforms.

Current E-Series cutaways run Ford's 7.3L gas V8. Diesel shuttle work has largely moved to larger chassis classes.
