Bus shopping has its own language. Here's every term you'll meet in quotes, spec sheets, and dealer conversations — defined in plain English.
Cutaway chassis. An incomplete vehicle from Ford or GM — engine, frame, and front cab with nothing behind it — sold to manufacturers who build bodies on it. Most shuttle buses in America start as cutaways.
Second-stage manufacturer. The company that builds the passenger body onto a cutaway chassis and certifies the completed vehicle to federal safety standards. Legally responsible for everything behind the cab.
Body-on-chassis. The construction approach above: a separately built passenger body mounted to a truck chassis, as opposed to a monocoque transit bus built as one unit.
Shuttle bus / mid-size bus. General terms for body-on-chassis passenger buses, typically 21–28 feet and 12–33 passengers, serving routes too big for vans and too small for transit coaches.
Minibus. Loose term for the smaller end of the shuttle range; usage varies by region and seller.
Low-floor bus. A bus with a floor near curb height and a ramp instead of a lift. Common in transit; a different vehicle category from lift-equipped body-on-chassis buses.
Upfitter. A company that modifies or completes vehicles after the original manufacturer — bus builders are one kind; the term also covers lift installers and equipment integrators.
OEM. Original equipment manufacturer. In bus conversations, usually means the chassis maker (Ford, GM) as distinct from the body builder.
E-350 / E-450. Ford's E-Series cutaway chassis classes — the workhorses of the shuttle industry. The E-450 carries a higher weight rating; see GVWR.
Transit (Ford). Ford's van platform, also offered as a cutaway; lighter-duty than E-Series, popular for smaller buses.
F-550 / F-600. Ford's medium-duty truck chassis used for larger, heavier shuttle bodies.
G3500 / G4500. Chevrolet's cutaway chassis classes, comparable to E-350/E-450.
GVWR. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating — the maximum legal weight of the loaded vehicle: chassis, body, fuel, equipment, driver, and every passenger. The single most consequential number on the spec sheet; it sets capacity, licensing, and duty margin.
GAWR. Gross Axle Weight Rating — the same idea per axle. The rear GAWR usually governs on a bus.
Curb weight. The finished bus's weight empty. GVWR minus curb weight is your payload for people and cargo.
Payload. The weight available for passengers, luggage, and add-on equipment before hitting GVWR.
Wheelbase. Distance between front and rear axles. Drives turning radius, interior layout, and ride.
Dually / DRW. Dual rear wheels — four tires on the rear axle for load capacity and stability. Standard on heavier shuttle chassis.
Gradeability. A bus's ability to climb grades at load — relevant for hill routes and parking ramps.
Cage / structural cage. The welded steel skeleton of the bus body — walls, roof structure, floor structure. The part that determines crash protection and long-term integrity, and the part you can't inspect after it's skinned.
Crossmembers. The lateral structural members under the floor tying the body to the frame rails.
Sidewall lamination. Bonding wall skins, structure, and insulation into a panel. One-piece laminated sidewalls eliminate horizontal seams — including the floor-line seam where corrosion classically starts.
Beltline. The horizontal line along the body at window-base height; on multi-piece bodies, a common seam and rust line.
Skirt. The lower body panels below floor level. First to see road spray and salt; welded skirt structure resists what bolted panels don't.
Front cap / rear cap. The molded front and rear body sections of the bus.
FRP. Fiberglass-reinforced plastic — common exterior skin material. Quality and thickness vary widely; UV exposure degrades lesser grades over years.
Azdel. A composite substrate panel used in place of wood products in walls; resists moisture and delamination.
Filon. A brand of fiberglass exterior sheet commonly laminated as bus and RV skin.
Subfloor. The deck between the steel floor structure and the finished flooring — traditionally plywood, in better construction a moisture-resistant composite. Where rot happens or doesn't.
Puck mounting. Attaching the body to the chassis frame on isolating mounts rather than bolting metal to metal — reduces transmitted road noise and vibration and spares the structure.
Powder coating. A dry electrostatic coating baked onto steel, covering surfaces liquid paint can't reach evenly. Applied to structure before assembly, it protects the steel you'll never see again.
Rain booth / water test. A factory test surrounding the finished bus with high-volume spray while an inspector checks for intrusion. Practices vary from testing every unit to sampling to none — worth asking about.
Entrance door portal. The structural frame around the passenger door — a high-wear, high-moisture zone.
ADA. Americans with Disabilities Act — sets accessibility requirements including lift specs, door dimensions, securement positions, and signage for covered services.
Wheelchair lift. Powered platform lift, typically at a side or rear door, meeting FMVSS 403/404 standards.
Ramp. The low-floor alternative to a lift; on body-on-chassis buses, lifts are the norm.
Securement position / station. A floor area with anchored tie-downs where a wheelchair rides. Spec-sheet notations like "+2" count these.
Q'Straint / retractor tie-downs. Common four-point wheelchair securement hardware; retractors self-tension.
12+2, 16+2, 25-pass. Configuration shorthand: ambulatory seats + wheelchair positions. A 16+2 bus seats 16 with 2 secured wheelchairs aboard.
Flip seat / foldaway. Seats that fold to open a wheelchair position, letting one bus run full-seated or accessible trip by trip.
Kneeling. Suspension feature lowering the entry step height for boarding.
FMVSS. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards — the regulations every completed bus must meet; the second-stage manufacturer certifies compliance.
Altoona testing. The FTA's standardized bus durability test program in Altoona, PA. Reports — structural scores, failures, maintenance hours — are public. Required for federally funded transit purchases.
Service life class. The Altoona test category matching intended life — e.g., 7-year/200,000-mile for many mid-size buses.
CDL. Commercial driver's license. Whether a shuttle bus requires one depends on weight rating, passenger capacity, and state rules — verify for your vehicle and state.
DOT number. Federal registration for commercial vehicle operators; requirements depend on use, capacity, and whether you cross state lines.
Section 5310. Federal grant program funding transportation for seniors and people with disabilities, administered through states — a common funding path for nonprofits buying accessible buses.
Pre-delivery inspection (PDI). The dealer or factory's final checklist before handing over the bus.
Structural warranty. Coverage specifically on the body's welded structure, separate from (and usually longer than) the general body warranty. The spread between builders' structural and subfloor terms is one of the most revealing comparisons a buyer can make.
Prorated coverage. Warranty terms that shrink over time — year-five coverage worth a fraction of year-one. Always ask what prorates.
TCO. Total cost of ownership: purchase price plus fuel, maintenance, repairs, downtime, and insurance, minus resale — the honest way to compare a cheaper bus against a better-built one over the years you'll own it.
