Every accessible vehicle answers one question first: how does a wheelchair get aboard? The two answers — a powered platform lift or a ramp — sound interchangeable and aren't. Which one fits depends on the vehicle architecture you're buying, the riders you serve, and the duty you run. Here's the decision, untangled.
The physics is floor height. Ramps work where floors are low — minivan conversions (lowered floors, short gentle ramps) and low-floor transit vehicles (curb-height floors, flip-out ramps). Lifts work where floors are high — and body-on-chassis shuttle buses built on truck frames have high floors by architecture. A ramp from a shuttle bus floor would need to be impractically long to hit a usable slope; nobody builds it. So the honest framing: choosing lift vs. ramp is mostly choosing between vehicle categories — minivan, low-floor transit vehicle, or shuttle bus — each with its own costs, capacities, and trade-offs. Ramp boarding is simple, fast for capable riders, and mechanically almost unbreakable — no motor, no interlocks, minimal maintenance. Manual-chair users who self-propel, and attendants pushing chairs, board in seconds.
The limits: ramp slope is work — self-propelling up even a compliant slope is a real push, and heavier powerchairs on steeper portable setups can challenge attendants. Ramp-based vehicles (minivans especially) trade away capacity: one or two chairs, few companions. Low-floor transit vehicles carry more but are a different, costlier vehicle class built for different duty. And in winter service, ramps ice.
A platform lift is effortless for the rider — roll on level, ride up level, roll off level. No slope to fight, no strength required, the same easy boarding for a manual chair, a 350-pound powerchair, or a rider standing with a walker who can't manage steps (the platform serves standees too — an underrated feature for senior service). Modern lifts built to federal standards carry generous capacity ratings, interlocks, handrails, and manual backup operation.
What they demand is respect as machinery: a lift is a powered device cycling in the weather, and it needs the maintenance habit our guides keep prescribing — cycled regularly, inspected annually, repaired promptly. A neglected lift is the accessibility equivalent of a flat tire: the whole capability is down. Lifts also cost boarding time (a full cycle runs a couple of minutes with securement) — trivial for most services, a throughput factor for high-frequency loops.
One spec note whichever way you go: the boarding equipment is only as good as the doorway, floor structure, and securement stations behind it — engineered together at the factory. That system integration, more than the lift-or-ramp badge itself, is what separates accessible vehicles that serve well for a decade from ones that fight their operators.
